The Italian Grand Prix is always one of the most popular and evocative events of the season, on a par with Monaco and Silverstone. This year, will have something up its sleeve:
The decision to have 2 DRS zones will transform the race into a "overtakefest". The Concept of DRS has reinvigorated passing in F1 this season, (although as a purist, I don't agree with the concept of artificial overtaking). Though, Monza could be the success story for a special race.
Looking at previous footage of the old Monza circuit, featuring the mostly flat out corners and ovalesque appearance, this picturesque venue really stood out to the tifosi and fans of the sport. It won't be quite like the 1960s & 70s, but I can assure that the race this year can cause great excitement to the drivers, the teams, and most importantly, the viewers.
The Talking Points:
Can Red Bull win at Monza? – Championship leader Sebastian Vettel famously won his first grand prix at Monza in the humble Toro Rosso amid a downpour in 2008, but his current squad Red Bull have never had the happiest time at the track and it remains their weakest venue on the calendar.
What will Ferrari achieve at home? – Ferrari have been right on the pace in recent races but hamstrung by circumstances and their car's huge dislike of the harder Pirelli tyres. With softs and mediums for their Ferrari's home race, this ought to be less of a problem. Fernando Alonso took the win here last year and probably 90
per cent of the crowd will be rooting for that to happen again.
Who's on Good Form?
1. Sebastian Vettel: Won his first grand prix since Valencia this year, has managed to pick up the momentum since a few shaky previous races.
2. Jenson Button: Thrilling Race at Spa, driving from 13th to 3rd, outracing his team mate Lewis Hamilton, very comfortable with his Mclaren
3. Michael Schumacher & Nico Rosberg: What more can I say about the 7 time world champion, 24th to 5th, great drive especially on his 20th anniversary. Nico Rosberg's start at Spa continues to show us a champion in the making and with Mercedes' top speed and the best DRS, consider them as the dark horse. for this race.
